LOC is committed to the research and development in hydrodynamics applied to naval architecture and ocean engineering. It supports the training and research of undergraduate and graduate students and professors and encourages didactic tests which celebrate scientific applications in the contemporary teaching of hydrodynamics. The use of reduced models along with the support of computational fluid mechanics has enabled significant advances.

The laboratory tests innovations with agility. In order to do so, it relies on a modern infrastructure, such as a wave channel and a current channel. The wave channel has transparent lateral walls, which allows the verification of wave phenomena in water. The current channel has an elevated footbridge for detailed observations, enabling hull resistance tests under displacement and design in ultra-reduced models. It is also equipped with a 3D printer, which allows the making of intricate models such as thruster models; hydraulic wave generator, for floating bodies tests, and an active beach in an advanced stage of development.

LOC develops projects and provides support to national and foreign companies, such as ononlinearroll performed for a joint industry project (16-client pool), including measures with PIV and bowline instrumentation with strain gauges. It tests devices for the harnessing of renewable energy from waves and currents. It also evaluates the dynamic stability of FPSO in turret, generating concrete results, and develops studies on hydrodynamic devices, such as interceptors, a resource still little researched, and its effect on porpoising. Furthermore, it performs vortex-induced vibration (VIV) and vortex-induced motion (VIM) studies.
