LOF develops and acts on scientific research projects applied to ocean circulation aiming at developing the physical oceanography in the country, the solution to environmental problems and the sustainable use of marine resources. Computational modeling, planning and execution of field measurements and analysis of remote sensing data form the basis for studies on ocean circulation of meso and large scales, the processes of the continental shelves and their impacts over coastal regions and the climatic variability on the oceans.

LOF integrates the National Institute of Sea Sciences in Integrated Studies from the Shelf to the Slope (INCT) PRO-OCEANO, one of the structuring projects of oceanographic research in the country, financed by CNPq. The laboratory also participates of the Network of Oceanographic Modeling and Observation (REMO), a multi-institutional project in operational oceanography which aims at developing a predicting system of marine currents and generating long term hydrodynamic fields for environmental studies.

The laboratory is linked to THE Ocean Engineering Program of Coppe.
