FIELDS OF FOCUS – NAVAL ENGINEERING

The courses and researches of the area of Naval Engineering focus mainly  the design, construction and use of ocean structures that enable waterway transportation and profiting from sea resources, such as oil exploitation. The area investigates issues related to: hydrodynamic and structural behavior of offshore systems, design of ships and other sea and river vessels, semi-submersible offshore structures, submarine robots, computer aided design methods, use of new materials, studies of the mechanical aspects of engines and propellers, maritime transportation and its logistics.

 

LINES OF RESEARCH

FIELDS OF FOCUS – COASTAL AND OCEANOGRAPHIC ENGINEERING

Coastal & Oceanographic Engineering deals with the application of physical sciences and mathematics to study and solve problems related to the hydrodynamics of the marine environment and the interaction between the sea and the coast, aiming at a rational occupation of the coastal region and better use of the sea and coastal resources for the benefit of mankind.  The expertise has been increasingly requested by the Brazilian society, as it discovers that developing coastal areas demands suitable technical solutions. Some of the issues to be considered are: the construction and modernization of ports, maritime terminals and marinas; coastal protection and correction works; effluent release into coastal bodies of water and the sea; exploitation of mineral and biological marine resources in the coast and continental shelf; besides the use of the area for tourism or leisure purposes. At the same time, the great development of offshore exploitation and the awareness of the important role of the oceans in climate changes make it necessary to widen the knowledge on ocean circulation and its interaction with the atmosphere in both aspects, scientific and practical. This explains the high demand for researchers and technicians capable of designing maritime constructions and means of sea monitoring and of understanding the phenomena of sea interaction with the coast and the atmosphere and the consequences of man intervention in both, coastal and ocean environments. Teaching and research of the Coastal and Oceanographic Engineering area is developed in four main lines of research, which comprise the different thesis topics, research works and the courses that must be attended to obtain the master’s and doctor’s degrees. It must be highlighted that all the lines of research are interconnected, with overlaps that are necessary for a full approach of environmental, scientific and engineering issues.
