The students of Naval and Oceanic Engineering at the Polytechnic School of UFRJ (Poli-UFRJ) Camila Linhares, Mateus Nehrer and Renan Pais were awarded by one of the main ship classification organizations in the world, the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). In addition to the trainees having their performance recognized by a commission of professors, each student received from ABS the amount of R$ 3000. This was the first edition of the ABS Awards for Poli-UFRJ.

The process of choosing the best students for academic performance consisted of a pre-selection by the Course Council (NDE – Structuring Teaching Nucleus) of the ten students with the highest Coefficient of Performance (CR) among those with 70% of completed credits. To reach the final decision of the three awarded nominees, in addition to academic performance (CR), activities developed at UFRJ and recorded in the student’s history were considered, such as mentoring, internships, exchanges, participation in a junior company, competition team, among others activities.

For Renan Pais, each of the activities carried out during the course, including mentoring, scientific initiation, exchange and internship, opened doors and contributed to achieving the recognition of the professors. “The award is important because it makes me reflect on the greatest opportunity I was given, which was to study at a public education institution,” she said. Already, student, Camila Linhares celebrated the achievement: “It is one more step accomplished and practically the golden key of my cycle in graduation”.

Mateus Nehrer confessed that the prize was a surprise: “When I received the e-mail, my first reaction was precisely to have no reaction, but then there was that feeling of recognition, that all the effort made over the years was worth it. feather. This, after 5 years of victories and defeats, is indescribable ”.

The ABS Award 2019 delivery ceremony was held on November 27, in the auditorium of Naval and Oceanic Engineering, with the presence of the director of Poli-UFRJ, Prof. Cláudia Morgado; the coordinator of the Naval and Oceanic Engineering course, prof. Luiz Felipe Assis; the coordinator of the Ocean Engineering Program at Coppe, prof. Antônio Carlos Fernandes; the Head of Worldwide Offshore Engineering at the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), engineer Sidney Bereicoa, a former student at Poli-UFRJ; and ABS HR Business Partner, Fabiana Ourique Dantas.

The student support program aims to contribute to academic and professional training in the field of Naval Engineering. In Brazil, the program supports courses in the area at UFPA, UFSC and Faetec-SP.
